For some people a train journey is solely a means of getting to where they need to go. They might be oblivious to the world outside the window, instead choosing to fill the time reading or listening to music. For me, however, travelling by train triggers an almost childlike sense of excitement and anticipation. As the world rushes by I am almost glued to the window, transfixed by the ever changing landscape, forever excited to discover what lies ahead.
On a long trip around Scotland a couple of years ago, I began to take photos through the window as a record of my holiday but it soon became obvious that these images meant more to me than mere record shots. They had become lasting memories of something bigger. They instantly transport me back to those journeys, to moments in time when I am in that childlike state, enveloped in a warm comforting feeling of happiness.
‘Through the Window’ isn’t merely a snapshot of the world outside or a collection of landscape images taken through the window - rather it’s a story about the journeys and how they make me feel.
